  1. Do Polish accountants enjoy their job? Results of a nationwide survey „Accountants’ self-portrait”

    Author: Stanisław Hońko

    See Issue Contents: fins.2018.3

    Abstract:

The aim of the paper is to examine whether their profession is a source of satisfaction for Polish accountants. The study used the results of a nationwide survey by the accountants association in Poland “2017 accountants’ portrait”. As it results from more than 2,500 responses by accountants, over three quarters of respondents assess their own job satisfaction highly. The image of an accountant satisfied with their job does not match the stereotypical perception of this profession. The respondents’ answers indicate that the level of satisfaction is related to the position held and the remuneration received. The perception of accountants as “generators of additional costs” or “business impediments” is also significant, which can lower satisfaction with working in accounting. The paper employs methods of a source analysis and a diagnostic survey. The data collected in the survey was analysed using simple statistical methods and was appropriately presented

  2. The effect of the changes in accounting estimates of the discount rate to the costs on account of creating provisions

    Author: Anna Staszel, Artur Hołda

    See Issue Contents: fins.2019.1

    Abstract:

The aim of the study is to answer the question of how a slight change in the actuarial assumptions (regarding the discount rate used) can affect the amount of the provisions, and consequently create the level of costs in the entity. In order to find the answer the financial statements of 148 stock-exchange-quoted companies from 2007 to 2014 (1184 financial statements in total) were analysed, determining whether the changes in long-term provisions for retirement benefits provisions (due to the use of a different discount) have a significant impact on the financial statements of these companies. The research involved the use of deductive-inductive research methods in the form of literature review and analysis of the content of financial statements. The obtained results indicate that the estimation of the discount rate significantly affects the levels of costs related to creating provisions, which may be an effective tool for manipulating the financial result.

  3. A comparability of information in the financial statements of gaming companies

Author: Małgorzata Czerny, Zuzanna Firkowska-Jakobsze, Stanisław Hońko

    See Issue Contents: fins.2019.4

    Abstract:

The purpose of this article is to assess a comparability in the financial statements of entities from the Polish gaming industry. The article uses an unconventional approach to the analysis of comparability of financial statements, with particular emphasis on the business model of the entity. The overall conclusion is that Polish companies used similar accounting policies during the period under review regarding the methods of valuation of assets and liabilities. The scope of disclosures regarding impairment of assets does not allow for a full assessment of the premises underlying them. It is difficult to find out the criteria for qualifying costs for research and development, which are an important asset item. Deficiencies in disclosures are a common feature of the analyzed reports, which can be interpreted as a symptom of their comparability. The analyzed reports, despite the differences diagnosed, make possible to compare the financial situation and achievements of gaming companies
